Exp 3: Bridge

Week 1

Die casting is a type of metal casting that can generate a large number of castings with excellent surface quality in a short time by pressing molten metal into metal molds at high temperature, speed, and pressure. A method is proposed to improve the accuracy of die casting by correcting metal mold. 3D scanning is adopted to measure the shape of cast aluminum. The 3D scan data of cast aluminum includes information about deformation in die casting; consequently, deformation and correction values can be estimated by comparing scan data with product CAD data. In general, 3D scanning technology is utilized for inspection of mechanical product. Thickness and clearance are basic parameters in product design. To assist the machine designer, some CAD systems provide part thickness visualization functions for wall thickness analysis methods for optimal design of casting partsSOLIDWORKS and Dassault Systemes. A method is proposed for visualizing the thickness and clearance of three-dimensional (3D) objects in a polyhedral representation. The proposed method employs the distance field of an object for the visualization. The 3D distance field of the object is a uniform cell decomposition of the space where at each cubic cell (voxel) in the space, the distance from the center of the voxel to the closest point on the object surface is recorded. To develop a suitable method for designing fiber composite materials, two points must be considered. Since fibers are oriented in the matrix, products made of fiber materials have anisotropic mechanical properties. Therefore, designers should take into account the underlying directions of fiber in the final product. This point concerns the ability of materials to assume thick and complex shapes. To prepare a thick fiber material product, several planar woven fiber laminates are accumulated or 3D woven fiber materials are used. Woven materials have advantages in terms of manufacturing costs and the stiffness.
